Modern Classic Bauhaus Design Furniture
What almost a century earlier Thonet effected with beechwood and hot steam, Alvar Aalto
managed with laminated wood and newly developed adhesives. Compared to the angular aesthetics
of the 20s Aalto here already represents the organic, "streamlined" soft shapes of the 30s.
He has designed a chair for a tuberculosis sanatorium, built by him in Paimio, where he had
also architecturally new ways. At the time of that experiment were constructed just the first
tubular steel furniture in Europe. Aalto, but resisted the movement of the mechanization and practicality, he believed
that organic materials, especially wood, is better suited to people - especially a sick
person in a sanatorium, "Tubular chrome finish are technically good solutions, psychologically,
